New laptop

Today I took my new laptop from my new employer.
hp nw8240. Great machine centrino 2GHz, with 2GB of ram, 80 GB, ati FireGL V5000.
Really nice screen 1600x1050, just great for the use.

I have it now for few days to play with it. So I am going to install linux, probably Debian to see is everything supported, and how it feels with Linux.

I have to keep the windows and install Windows 2003 server, and VS.Net 2005, coz the machine is mainly for work, but I will keep the dual boot with Debian.

I am so proud that at home I don't have Windows and this machine should have linux and when I am at home with it and not working, I will boot in Linux and just have fun.

Cheap USB array from IDE disks

Well I am constantly building my Media Center, and currently I have four HDD's in it.
The case gets quite hot and my girlfriend wants to have something more beautiful in the leaving room.
So I have decied that I am going to split the whole media center in two pieces.
  • Media center
  • Storage
I am having this idea from quite a while, but I don't want to keep separate computer running just for the storage and I was looking for solution to connect just the disks outside thru Ethernet. But the solutions that are on the market are really expensive for a home use.
And today I found IDE to USB connector from USBGeek this looks really nice.
So now I need USB hub (check have one), and PSU (check have one old AT). So I have to build some case and just put the disks in it together with the USB hub and the PSU and I am gonna have cheap USB array of IDE disks.

Just created

I just created the blog.

From time to time I find something to write about, it is mainly geeky stuff.

This week has been really strange.

First I am changing my job, and this was the reason to start the blog.
Second my girlfriend was really ill so I had hard time at home, looking after her.

The Finnish health system really sucks.
She called for doctor appointment at Monday after having 3 awful days with fever and when she went to the polyclinic the she was able to see only the sister who asked her "Do you need leave from work?" and refused to send her to doctor.
